Note from Sundara...So I'm getting this ready to post this Daily Dream a day early for dog-going-to-vet related reasons, and I found out in the middle of preparing it for you that the Queen died and now the whole story I had to tell you about it seems rather frivolous. I thought about coming up with something that had more gravitas but then I figured the Queen would want us to carry on because that's what she always did, so here we go. Stay with me. It's a long one, but it's worth it.
This is some selfish yarn dyeing and you are all going to laugh at me for the reasons. I have a serious addiction to Candy Crush. It's bad. I'm on level 987. I don't know whether to be ashamed or proud. I play it whenever I have two minutes to spare. Waiting for water to boil. Or the microwave. Or at school pick-up for my kid. Or other unmentionable places. That sort of thing. But I keep thinking there has got to be a better use of my time. Like what else could I have accomplished instead of getting to level 987? You know what I keep thinking I could have done? I could have crocheted a blanket. Hear me out.
If I'm going to replace my Candy Crush addiction, whatever replaces it has to be super portable and something I can pick up and do for two minutes without thought. You know what is super portable and can be done for two minutes without thought? Crocheted granny squares. You know what you can do with granny squares? You can make a blanket.
So this is color #1 for my Candy Crush granny square blanket. I'm actually going to crochet hexagons. I haven't figured out what sort of hexagons. That's TBD. The yarn had to come first. There will also be a yellow and a pink and the three colors of hexagons will be crocheted with a border of white that will make them into a square. Finally, they'll all be sewn together, I'll have my Candy Crush blanket, and my addiction will be conquered.
I want you to join me. Or at least try it out. Because I bet you've got a phone or a tablet you feel you're spending too much time on, and you could put that time to better use. But your knitting project always seems like too much effort to get out. Because you've got to figure out where you are and what needs to be done and counting rows and figuring out patterns and blah, blah, blah. So you don't bother. You stick with your screen.
So why not get a couple skeins? And a crochet hook. Find an easy granny square pattern you can memorize. Try it out while you are waiting for the microwave or in line at the drive-through or wherever you futz around on your phone. You never know. You might just end up with a blanket instead of screen time guilt.
"Candy Crush" will not be dyed again but corresponding colors might be. Depending how this project goes. Updated: Less than one batch left.
