Hawaiian Sunset
extra fine fingering merino

Note from Sundara...I may have mentioned that my parents were just took a Hawaiian vacation, which, you know, Hawaii is good inspiration. I saw this photo and thought...drama! And you know what drama makes for? People-stopper projects. The projects where, when you where them, people stop you and tell you how amazing it is and what a fantastic knitter you are. And don't we all love that? That's the best. Makes you feel like a million bucks and makes all those hours and hours of knitting worth it.

Personally, I love me some pink and orange, so I would use all three of these colors together, but even just the dark purple with either the orange or the pink would be sufficient people-stopper dramatic. Or, you could do just the orange and the pink because bright! is also people-stopper dramatic. You pretty much can't go wrong with any combination of these three. Go with whatever calls to you. It'll be the right people-stopper for you.

"Hawaiian Sunset" will not be dyed again. Updated: 3 skeins of pink, 1/2 batch of orange, and one batch of the dark purple left.

Extra Fine Fingering Merino is 437 yards and 100 grams of 100% super wash merino.

      The Secret Life of Lilacs
fingering baby alpaca
      The Secret Life of Lilacs
fingering baby alpaca

Note from Sundara...Our lilacs are getting ready to bloom and I was contemplating dyeing yarn inspired by the pretty little blossoms. Except lilacs are so sweet and precious. Such innocent flowers. It occurred to me: what if lilacs have a dark side? What if, secretly, in the dark of night, they are plotting. Maybe something only slightly devious like a hostile takeover of space around the innocent hydrangea growing next to them? Or maybe something truly evil like a plan to murder the peonies? We just don't know. They only look sweet and innocent. We don't know what they are thinking.

So I went with the darker side of lilacs for my "sweater knit-able" color for this yarn, since lots of you are still buying sweater-quantities. This is a very gorgeous, dark, dark lilac-colored purple. It's spring-inspired without being obvious about, so it's a color that would probably work year round. And it's super soft, because it's baby alpaca. And even though the lilacs might be plotting murder, the yarn certainly isn't.

"The Secret Life of Lilacs" will not be dyed again. Updated: 2 batches left.

Fingering Baby Alpaca is 437 yards and 100 grams of 100% baby alpaca.

Note from Sundara...I thought I'd go to Paris for inspiration for my most favoritist yarn base of all. I know some of you think the 100% silk is the best yarn base, and that really is soft and shiny and delicious, but this one wins out for me. It's so soft and luscious. I be pretty happy to knit myself a pair of footie pajamas out of it and then never take them off. I don't care how ridiculous I'd look. It'd be worth it.

And this color is amazing. It hews the line right between purple and blue. It's pretty much prefect in every way. So maybe if you aren't up for knitting yourself footie pajamas, maybe at least get one skein to wrap around your neck. I hear Joji has a new one-skein wonder shawl-scarf-neck-wrappy thing that looks delightful. That would work. Although my vote is still for the full-body footie pajamas.

"La Dame de Fer" will not be dyed again. Two batches available.

Note from Sundara...My parents are on vacation in Hawaii, so I've got lush, tropical flowers on my mind. I've also still got an on-going obsession with two-color brioche. Particularly Stephen West's Melted Mirage. Just look at those tassles! So today's yarn is actually a two-part Daily Dream. Because I am going to knit myself that shawl and I need some yarn.

(Full disclosure: Needed some yarn. I've already cast-on and the pattern is divine.)

Next week, I'll have the fingering merino gradient portion of the shawl for us all, but today is the peachy goodness of alpaca fluff. Now, the pattern uses a fingering weight alpaca fluffiness, so you'll need to hold this double (which is fine, it's easy, don't let that scare you off) The pattern also uses what I consider to be a very boring, basic peach yarn. We need something much more interesting. And this is much more interesting and super pretty. It's everything from pale yellow to hints of strawberry and all sorts of peachy-goodness in between. It knits up just gorgeous and it looks amazing as the fluffy portion of the two-color brioche portion of this pattern. Or probably any two-color brioche pattern you might want to knit. Or, really, anything else you might want to make out of it.

"The Lone Hibiscus" will not be dyed again. Updated: half a batch left.

Lace Silky Alpaca is 328 yards and 50 grams of 75% brushed baby suri alpaca and 25% mulberry silk.

      Ume Blossoms
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...How was I supposed to resist this photo? I only recently found out that there was a Japanese version of flowering plums that were different from the flowering plums that I know and love. Aren't they pretty?

And while the blossom pink of the fingering merino silky cashmere is super pretty and super soft (softest yarn I have!), the mohair is really the color that I'm proud of here. The photos don't do it any justice. It's a stunning mix of a sort of forest-teal green with a dark navy that goes almost violet in the sun. And, of course, underneath all that fluffy mohair, those colors have the sparkle of the silk core. If you can find a way to combine these two yarns so these colors can coordinate with these colors, it would really be something.

"Ume Blossoms" will not be dyed again. Updated: 3 mohair & 2 silky cashmere left.

Fingering Merino Silky Cashmere is 437 yards and 100 grams of 75% super wash merino, 15% mulberry silk, and 10% cashmere.

Note from Sundara...I have two goals with today's yarn. The first is to live vicariously through the color because I yearn for this rose bush, but I am not allowed any more rose plants (sigh). The second is to convince you that sport weight yarn is not the devil.

Seriously. Y'all seem to hate to knit anything with sport gauge. Periodically, one of you asks for it. I dye it, and it inevitably ends up being the least popular yarn weight of all time. Which makes no sense, because sport weight has so much to offer. It's faster to knit up than fingering, but still lightweight. It's a year-round gauge. Anything you make with it can be worn layered (still lightweight!) but is delicate enough that you can use it in the summer, when the nights get chilly.

So. Now that I've made the case for why you should make yourself something out of this glorious red sport weight yarn, what should you make? Have you seen the "Pasadena Pullover" by Mari Tobita? It's beyond gorgeous. You should knit it just to knit it it's such a lovely design. But, if you want something that will work for the upcoming warmer months, "Joni" by Nastasja Hornby is perfect for summer. And, if you don't want a sweater, there are tons of sport weight accessories patterns. I like the "Making Waves Cowl" by Kay Hopkins. And of course, for my crocheting friends, there is the "Honeybunch Tee" by Anne ten Haaf and the "Astrid shawl" by Tatsiana.

So many options! Such pretty yarn! Go forth and embrace the sport!

"Red Eden" will not be dyed again.

Note from Sundara...I have become obsessed with 2-color brioche. I may be the last knitter on the planet to fall in love with this stitch, but in that I held the opinion that it was terribly difficult and I've been knitting for well over two decades, I'm guessing I'm not the only one. So I am here today to urge you to try it. It's SO FUN. And not hard at all. Just watch this video (maybe eight times) and you'll see it's almost as easy as ribbing. Seriously.

And now that I've conquered it, I want to knit Stephen West's "Flying Foxtail" wrap. Which I've lusted after for years. And what better than one of the greatest color combos of all time––green and purple (or you know, chartreuse and deep, dark, violet) in super soft and shimmery fingering silky merino. I don't even care that deep dark purple isn't my color. It's worth it. And if Flying Foxtail is too much 2-color brioche for you, consider "Marley" by Andrea Mowry. It's nice and basic for beginners. Or, if you just like the color combo and don't want to go near brioche, "Pure Joy" by Joji is one of my favorite 2-color shawls.

"Agastache" will not be dyed again. 1 skein left of the violet.

Note from Sundara...My mother, who is very proper in all things, suggested that she needed a sweater to go with the white pants she'd gotten to wear on Memorial Day. She and my daughter thought it would be best if a)the yarn was dyed by me, b)the sweater was knit by me, c)it was lightweight (for summer!) and (this was the important bit) d)the color was a bright blue with a hint of violet. Now, bright blue with a hint of violet sweaters look smashing with white pants and Memorial Day is quickly approaching, so who was I to deny my mother and my daughter?

I am knitting my mother's sweater on my knitting machine, so I'm going to use the "Suri Shirt" pattern by Caidree, because it is flattering and should be easy to convert. Other great summer sweater options are "Niveole" by Hel et Zei. Not only is that one free, the yardage is low. Double bonus. I've actually always wanted to knit myself the "Umbria Summer Top" by Cookie the Knitter. It's super stylish. Or, if none of those work for you, "Tegna" by Caitlin Hunter, has been knit at least 6700 times and that many knitters can't be wrong.

"Glories of the Morning" will not be dyed again. Updated: 2 batches left.

Note from Sundara...I saw this photo and through "I should go on a road trip there" and then I remembered the last time I spent more than five hours in a car, I ended up with a pinched nerve and in desperate need of a chiropractor. So it seems road trips are no longer in my future. Sigh. Hopefully, you aren't in such dire straights when it comes to car trips.

But if you are, or even if you are not, but are not in a position to travel to the American South West, I have the yarn that will let you live vicariously through it. It is all gorgeous violet-indigo-sunset sky blues and that indescribable color that is the desert red when it is washed with the fading darkness of twilight. It's not a color I have a name for, as it is somewhere between sandstone and plum and maybe eggplant? I don't know. It's a fascinating, gorgeous color. This yarn is those two colors and all sorts of shades in between. And it's Bluefaced Leicester, which is, well, let's go with new. It's a new yarn. Which is always fun.

"Road Trip" will not be dyed again. Three batches available. And, I should note that last time I offered this yarn base, I said that mentioned that it smelled a bit like sheep. It does, but only when it is wet. It has no smell whatsoever when it is dry. So when you wash it, just use one of those of wool washes with something like lavender or something that smells nice and you'll be fine. Or, you know, put up with the sheep-smell. It's not that bad.

Fingering BFL is 437 yards and 100 grams of 100% British Superwash Bluefaced Leicester wool.
7 stitches per inch on US 3/3.25mm needles.
Gently hand wash in tepid water for project longevity.

Note from Sundara...I want to live here. Of course, when I live here, the tree will always be in blossom, the sky will always be blue, and flowers will always be blooming in the front lawn. Right? If we are going to have a dream, let's dream big. I will also have 100% of my time free for knitting and I'll never have to rip back and I'll never make a mistake. (Dream big!)

As for today's lovelies, I'm actually keeping 2 skeins of #2 (the pink and yellow silky baby alpaca) for myself to knit a giant scarf of 80 bazillion rows of stockinette on my knitting machine. (Seriously! Get yourself a knitting machine. I knit my daughter a fingering weight sweater in a weekend. They are brilliant.) But since I'm also an advocate of always having something lace on the needles, what I would also knit with any one of these colors is "Danse Macabre" by Boo Knits. Because it's gorgeous, and, once you get past the lace bits, there's a bunch of stockinette to make your life easier. (Needs 1 skein of any of these colors).

For those of you who want to knit some lace, but not-so-complicated lace, "A Hap for Harriet" by Kate Davies is a lovely little thing, and also uses 1 skein of any of these colors. And for those of you who want the most simple, but still lace, Viajante by Martina Behm is about as straightforward as you can get. The Vampire's Hydrangea
fingering polwarth
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I have decided, at the reasonable age of 50, to attempt get over my also very reasonable fear of vampires. I have decided to go about doing that by dyeing yarn inspired by various vampire thingies. Today we have hydrangeas that have been drained of their life force by vampires. Because I have an overactive imagination and we are ignoring the fact that vampires are not real.

I will be knitting myself the "Petal Drop" socks by Florence Miller because they are pretty and they will keep vampires from nipping at my toes (Attempting to get over the fear––not over it!) I think Polwarth is the perfect yarn because it is sturdier than merino––better to ward off fanged teeth––and also it will hold up better as socks than merino. I've also been told that Polwarth is great for weaving, for my weaving friends out there. So if you also need to keep fanged teeth off your toesies, a skein will do you for a pair of these socks. (And the color will not show the dirt if you are too busy knitting to bother to sweep or vacuum as regularly as maybe you should.)

"The Vampire's Hydrangea" will not be dyed again

Fingering Polwarth is 437 yards and 100 grams of 100% super wash New Zealand Polwarth.

      Red Hot Poker
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I very nearly didn't name this Red Hot Poker because none of this yarn is red, but it is the name of this flower and it is a great name. Isn't it? Great name. Great flower. And even better yarn.

You all are probably excited about the yak because you all can't get enough of the yarn, but I'm excited about #2, the yellow lace silky alpaca. Most of you are probably thinking "Good Lord, that is some yellow yarn." And maybe not in a good way. But it is yellow in a good way. The thing with the lace silky alpaca is that when you knit it up, the color diffuses almost exponentially. So if you want even a basically bright color out of it, you need the color to look almost garish in the skein. So when this knits up, it will be the most gorgeous yellow with hints of saffron and marigold. It's a yellow-lovers dream.

#3, the fingering silky yak, is also a yellow-lovers dream, but also a coral-lovers dream. This is all fiery sunset colors and I'm loathe to let you all have these skeins because it's so pretty and these are the colors I like to wear. But I will. I will let you have the entire batch because yarn dyers can't hoard all the yarn.

#1, the blue lace silky alpaca is a deep, rich, super saturated blue, that, like #2, will hold its color when knit up. Or at least most of it. It's going to diffuse because all lace yarn diffuses some of its color, but it will still be a very elegant deep blue.

"Red Hot Poker" will not be dyed again. Updated: 1 skein of the blue alpaca and 3 skeins of the yak left.

Lace Silky Alpaca is 328 yards and 50 grams of 75% brushed baby suri alpaca and 25% mulberry silk.
8 stitches per inch on US 3/3.25mm needles.

Gently hand wash in tepid water for project longevity.

      The First Clouds of Dawn
extra fine fingering merino
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...This set of colors could easily be worked up into a total showstopper. What project that might be, I have no idea. You all are a lot smarter than I am when it comes to figuring out what to knit with my yarn. But the color combination is so unexpected, they make you look twice, and then look more closely.

As for each individual color, they photographed remarkably true, so what you see is pretty much what you get. I wanted to capture that field of lupine covered in mist (#4, far left), along with the pale yellows and oranges of the sunrise (#3, middle left). The darker, deeper purples of the upper sky are in #1 (far right), and I decided to add a bit of those darker orange to those same purple clouds in #2 (middle left). You could mix and match any of the skeins, as they all go well together, but I'm still partial to the set because I like my showstoppers.

"The First Clouds of Dawn" will not be dyed again. 3 skeins left of #1, 2 skeins left of #3, & 4 skeins left of #4.

      All Aflush
extra fine aran merino
1 skein left!

Note from Sundara...Well, who could resist these irises? This was so much fun to dye and will probably be even more fun to knit. I figured you could get a single skein, or, for those of you who hate knitting fingering but want to knit a sweater in a sort of fade/gradient, this could work.

#1 (left, the blue-leaning one) started with those tiny little stripes of blue in the center of the petals. It went from there. It's got that creamy-yellow of the petals, along with hints of the purple.

#3 (right, the purplish one) is probably the most "inspired" by the actual flower. It's super pretty, with that creamy yellow covered in the purple. Which, honestly, calling it purple is a disservice. It's so much more. I want to say this is my favorite of the bunch, but that's like saying you have a favorite child. I really shouldn't choose.

"All Aflush" will not be dyed again. Updated: 1 skein left of #1 and #3.

      Arc de Triomphe
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I've been wanting to use this photo for ages. It's the Arc de Triomphe, for starters. But I love how it gives such a sense of how it must feel at that specific moment in time. And the colors. I just love these colors.

#1 fingering silky merino singles (right) may not look like much, but I actually used bright orange and bright purple to get what is a hazy, spicy, coppery, rosy triumph of a color. If it were me, I'd pair it with #2 fingering silky merino singles (middle) and knit myself Stephen West's "Flying Foxtail Wrap." (2 skeins each color) Because, while the obvious choice for that project is two super contrasting colors, the projects I like best are those with two colors that have a medium contrast from the same color family. Like these two.

#3 Italian fingering merino cashmere (left) is for those who want a little bit of all the color but want it in one skein. It doesn't go all the way to the spicy, coppery burnt orange of #1, but it's got rich, deep shades of ruby red that wash over that deep blue-purple. It's pretty amazing.

"Arc de Triomphe" will not be dyed again. Updated: 3 skeins left of #2 and #3.

Fingering Silky Merino Singles is 437 yards and 100 grams of 75% super wash merino and 25% mulberry silk.

      Twr Mawr
2 skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I was laid up with a pinched nerve and ended up watching a Netflix documentary on rugby, of all things. Which, OMG that is one brutal sport. But it got me thinking about Wales and all things green. And also, how great the Welsh language is. I mean Twr Mawr? What a great name is that? Twr doesn't even have any vowels. I love that.

But let's talk about green yarn. This is all things green and all sorts of different green. Greens I never dye.

#1 fingering merino (far left) is probably the most straightforward. It's brighter and more saturated than I usually dye, but it's bright while still being dark. It's a green green. With all those greens you think about when you think about green.

#2 high twist (second from left), I threw in for our sock knitters or for those of you who want something a little sturdier. It's the all around color of this lot. It's what you would get if #1 and #5 had a baby.

#3 fingering merino (the middle) is like a green olive tapenade. Maybe with some capers and parsley thrown in to round out the flavor.

"Twr Mawr" will not be dyed again. 1 skein left of #1, and 1 skein left of #2.

      The Velvet Light of Dawn
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I have two more batches of the baby silky yak, and I wanted to do one of them (today's) in a dark wine red because that is always popular. So I went with this photo because it's another I wouldn't have normally picked because mixing orange and magenta aren't popular, but breaking it down into three different colors loosely inspired by the photo? All sorts of fun things.

The baby silky yak (#1 and far left in the trio) is the most straightforward. Like I said, it is a dark wine red and glorious in silk and yak. Yak being even softer than cashmere. The fingering merino cashmere (#3 and far right in the trio) is all sorts of dark browns with glints of orange and some reds in it from the inspired dawn. It literally feels like a rich velvet. But the fingering merino singles (#2 and the middle of the trio) is the one I find the most interesting. It's a combo of dark cherry reds and a deep, muted fuchsia - pretty much the color of the sky in the photo above the orange. It's not a color combination you see often, but it works well in this color. It should knit up oh so pretty; the two colors blending together to make something so much more than each as an individual. I hope some of you will try it out.

"The Velvet Light of Dawn" will not be dyed again. Just a few skeins of #2 left.

      'Tis the Season
extra fine fingering merino
3 skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I wanted to do something red, because it is the season, but I didn't want to do something super obvious Christmas red. Because usage for that sort of red is kind of limited. Plus, my mom has this gorgeous dark red scarf she always wears this time of year and it's always festive without being super obvious about it. She gets compliments whenever she wears it.

So while there are literally ten days left to wear gorgeous dark red scarves, there is no reason to not plan ahead for next year. Or knit something you can wear at other times of years in addition to a few weeks in December. Because that's what is so great about this red. It can work year round if you want it to. You get all the options and can still feel festive.

"Tis the Season" will not be dyed again.
